After reviewing the instruction book, I found this machine very easy to use, quiet and really great in the way it performed. All sewing stitches are very easy to access at the touch of your finger and easy adjustments can be made during the sewing process. The embroidery part of this machine (the real reason I bought it) works very easily, also. I would recommend this machine for it’s price, ease of use and compact design. The additional software was too expensive but contains some nice designs. I don’t know if I would buy the software right away, maybe after I got to be more expert in the embroidery part of the machine. Still, all in all, a great buy.

I am so pleased with this purchase! First of all, the operating manual/instructions (DVD included) are very well written and “user friendly.” The machine does so much–and for the price! Someone might ask, “Why do you need so many stitches?” –but I think this machine opens a world of creative possibilities with all the included stitches and functions. AND THE EMBROIDERY OPTION!–I love it, and it is so easy to use! The quality and options package on this machine, together with the price, make this an excellent value!!! Brother XR-9000 Computerized Sewing Machine Reviews.

I’ve used this machine to make lots of crafts and a full sized log cabin quilt with stippling. The top drop bobbin is easy to thread and the bobbin winder is simple to use. The extra feet and longer arm quilting table are wonderful extras. The font is nothing amazing but works nice for simple monogramming. I like that you can drop the feed dogs and free motion quilt. It is a low shank machine and I was able to get a generic walking foot for it. The backlit lcd screen is very nice and easy to read – not too dim or too small. The best feature though is the automatic start/stop, needle up/down, and reverse stitch buttons. I haven’t even used the foot pedal!

The XR9000 is very lightweight, I don’t know if that makes it less robust or not- it seems pretty sturdy but I would not use it for leather. The sewing mechanism is wonderful- very quiet and soft, like cutting through butter. Foot pedal is responsive and the speed limit slider works great. There’s also a button control but for whatever weird reason you can not use the start/stop button while the pedal is plugged in; I don’t foresee that button getting a lot of use.
There’s a reverse/reinforce button which unfortunately is a temporary switch only- not a toggle. It can be used in conjunction with the foot pedal or you just hold the button down and it will go in reverse at a slow speed.

Several extra presser feet are included, e.g. buttonhole, buttonstitch, zipper, blind hem. The one thing I am missing is a quilting guide. There’s a slot for it in the foot but it has to be purchased separately. While the accessories are fine, the accessory storage is not. There’s a front panel section that you have to pull out and then inside there’s a plastic pouch with all the goodies. You have to keep the stuff in the pouch or they’ll fall out of the machine. For $0.20 more Brother could have added a proper compartment with a hinge- instead they took a very cheap and impractical storage approach.

Lighting is provided by a bright but focussed white LED. I am somewhat spoiled by having a high wattage light bulb in the previous machine which lit up the entire working area. The XR9000 LED lights up the presser foot really well but that’s about it. The “automatic needle threading” is not automatic, but still extremely useful (I keep missing the eye when trying to do it manually).

Even though I wound 3 bobbins I still can’t tell whether the machine has an automatic stopping mechanism or just slows down a lot once the bobbin is full. Either way you can run the winding at full speed for a minute and it’s quite noticeable once it’s complete. The bobbins are full-size and top-loading. There’s a somewhat tricky part about catching a hook when loading the bobbin which is not well explained in the manual. The first time I missed that which resulted in unbalanced stitches; reloading the bobbin more carefully took care of it. Another nice feature is that you don’t have to pull up the lower thread before you can start to sew.

The stitch patterns are plentiful and half of them look quite nice. The other half has weird default settings where the default stitch length is too long, you can adjust that in the display but it still strikes me as odd. The monogramming feature works- it’s fixed size, fixed font and does not look all that great. The XR9000 does not have any adjustable settings for presser foot height or pressure. However, the included default presser foot has some kind of spring adjustment built in which is supposed to help with thick fabric layers. I have not had a chance to try it out yet. The manual and instructional DVD are great and cover all the essentials.

EDIT- 2 months later: I have been having problems with thin fabric veering off to the side which made it impossible to do blind hems or other straight stitches with tight tolerances. For 2 months I thought this was me using it wrong until I brought it to a local store. As it turns out the machine shipped with some defects- the shank was slightly angled and the feed dog timing was off. Repair was $60 and came with a warning by the mechanic that the Brother machines are not particulaly reliable due to lack of solid metal construction. Machine loses 1 star for this and the fact that Brother does not have many authorized service centers.

I bought this Brother machine to replace an old Singer machine that wore out it’s gears. The Brother CE-5000 is a great machine. We bought it refurbished and it looks new. Works great; really can’t say anything bad about it.

However, one advantage is also a disadvantage if you are used to an older, and heavier machine. The Brother is lightweight and easy to move around, store, etc … a good thing. It also doesn’t stay put when you are wrestling heavy materials around to get it in position to sew. This takes some getting used to. The old machine was built into a table so I may have to build a platform to hold this machine in place. We recommend it as a good machine.

We purchased a refurbished CE-5000PRW, at the beginning I wasn’t sure about not buying a brand new one but after reading reviews and realizing the guarantee was the same as for a new machine we decided to buy it.
After we got it we have not had a single complain, it was a gift for my wife and she loves it, like some other people say, the automatic Threading System is a little tricky at the beginning but once you get it it works great.

Bottom line it was a great purchase, the vendor was efficient, the delivery was fast and without any problem, I recommend it 100%

I’m not an expert sewer. “Good” is even pushing it – so I need a lot of help. I really like the auto threader and one-step buttonholes. For practice, I have a trunk load of patterns, fabrics and husband’s old shirts (or at least I tell him they’re old) – for that this machine is quite easy and fun to use.

Its been about 12 years since I have sewed (on a borrowed machine)… I purchased this machine in Feb and it was so easy to set up and use.. I am about halfway done a baby quilt and have really enjoyed sewing again. I think that if the machine hadn’t worked so nicely I would have been frustrated. I haven’t sewn enough to really know how to fix problems. The instruction manual was easy to follow and at one point when the tension wasn’t right, the manual provided me what I needed to fix it…. I have a friend who sews regularly who recommended this to me and I have been exremely happy…..

The ad said it was lightweight and it is wonderfully so. The quick start guide was easy to follow to get started right away on my projects. It is a diagram-based chart for getting the bobbin and the machine threaded and I breezed through it; however, when I got to the automatic needle threader, I got a bit frustrated figuring out how the mechanicism worked. When I realized I had to look at the needle hole at a left angle and not straight on, I saw how the mechanism worked and it then was so easily to thread the machine I almost cried for joy. I have never had an automatic needle threader before and it is wonderful.

I played with the dials on a piece of scrap fabric for a 10 minutes and then started on my projects. I did some light mending and then finished with sewing heavy outdoor fabric and the machine handled it all beautifully. The reverse stitch button is prominent and easy to push and the machine responds quickly. As an aside, the machine comes with lots of gizmos to do all kinds of special sewing projects (embroidery) and also 4 standard needles. For my outdoor heavy fabric, I need to buy the appropriate needle next time (I broke one of the standard needles) but the machine itself soared right through the tough task I put it through. Swapping the work surface from sleeve fitting to a large table top work surface and back to as it is pictured here is a snap. It comes with a cloth carrying case. I bought a plastic case and that was a waste of money because the cloth case is sufficient for this lightweight sewing machine. I am so pleased with this product. You can have a great sewing machine for a reasonable price and store it quickly and easily. No need for a whole room in your home for sewing!

This machine is a real workhorse. I worked in a tailor shop for years on a Bernina and fell in love with their machines, but could never afford one. This machine is as easy to use and works as well as a Bernina and I have since found out that Janome makes some of Bernina’s machines for them, specifically the Bernette.

I just got this machine this week, but I absolutely LOVE it. I have gone through multiple layers of fleece without so much as a hiccup and have also done some finer work on thin cotton material, also without a hiccup.

It is a metal arm & base with some plastic parts. Has a storage box right on the front which is handy, and is very easy to change stitches, etc.

Definitely worth the money. You won’t regret purchasing this machine.

I bought this machine because my youngest daughter, Alison, really needed a solid sewing machine to start a home business called “Baby Green” making reusable baby diapers. Years ago I sacrificed and gave my oldest daughter, Krista, my own machine that I loved (a Janome) when she went to the Savannah College of Art and Design to study fashion design. I love my new sewing machine! My husband, who had never sewn with a machine before, set it up quickly and we both can use it easily. It’s so easy to use I am planning several more sewing projects for this summer. On my last project, the machine had no problems sewing through denim seams and pockets. I am very pleased with all of the features (59 different stitches, a double needle for gathering, needle threader, button foot) I got with this relatively inexpensive sewing machine. Everything is working great so far. I would recommend this machine for anyone looking for the basics plus the capability for more advanced sewing down the road.

I just bought this sewing machine about three weeks ago. I got it as a replacement for a Bernette that I used for about thirty minutes total that the repair man could not figure out how to fix. I am working on my fashion certificate and needed one right away. I picked this one partially because it was PINK!
This machine is easy to use – bobbin winding, changing stitches, portability, two-needle. I like a mechanical machine. I have not tried the buttonholer yet. A great first machine! This is my fourth. I like the reverse, the freearm, the size.
Petty annoyance – the presser foot is low when up, so when you need to know where your needle is going into the fabric, you have to knock the foot up with your finger so you can see – not a big deal. BIG deal – put the zipper foot on and then you have to adjust the needle width out of the zipper foot groove to get the seam close enough to the zipper, because the foot is wide(???) at the back and on the same level(???) as the foot itself. Maybe I’ll just use invisible zippers.
If you are rough with things, do not buy this machine. Many of the parts are plastic, like the presser foot lever. We use that a lot.
I have sewn with many layers of denim, very light fabrics, and much in between with great success. Just change the needle after each project.
I hope I have given you enough information to begin to make an informed decision.
