We are continuing taking the pearls daily and they are still working beautifully. The company advertises them as a way to control constipation, but they work well for us for control of diarrhea. I have accidentally forgotten to take them a couple of times now and had my symptoms come right back. These things are worth their weight in gold.

During a recent MRI, a serious sinus infection was found & I had to take HUGE doses of antibiotics for 10 days. I did not get any secondary infections this time, either.

I have spent years battling with doctors over what ‘disease’ I have..Crohn’s/IBS/Celiac?? I suffered greatly for over 25 years with raging bouts of cramps & diarrhea. If I took Lomotil or Immodium, they would either not work or cause constipation & even more bloating and gas.

5 months ago I went on a modified version of the Metabolic Syndrome Diet and started an exercise regimen, (I have lost over 50 lbs so far), but whole grains seemed to aggravate me even more. I experienced horrible bloating, sporadic diarrhea & a sharp pain in my lower left abdomen. My GP suggested going on Atkins, but I tried that in the 90′s and hated it. I don’t eat a LOT of carbs, but I wasn’t about to give them up altogether!

I can’t eat sugar or milk, so most of the plethora of probiotic products on the market were off-limits, so I decided to try acidophilus. I tried the regular acidophilus tablets and they did not help at all.

I saw these on a gold box special and thought that they made sense. It’s only logical that stomach acids would alter the bacteria if eaten in yogurt or cheese (my hubby ate those stupid ‘activ’ cheeses for 21 days straight with NO benefit at all).

After starting the pearls, my entire digestive system seemed to have miraculously returned to what it was in my teens within days. No gas, no bloating, no diarrhea or constipation (from immodium or lomotil, which I no longer have to take). Now I know what ‘regular’ means..it’s wild!

This is my third warm mist humidifier. They just don’t last very long. The cool mist ones don’t seem to make the room more humid. The last one I had (which looked similar to this) lasted two years, and the rubber stopper part at the bottom dried up during the summer (when it was not in use) and cracked. My first one only last one year. I am resigned to the fact that I will likely have to buy a humidifier every 1-2 years, so I’d better not spend a lot for them. This one works well, and on the low setting, can last 10-11 hours. This setting is enough for my medium sized room. On high output, it goes through the water very quickly, and if your room is small, will feel tropical. The one thing I don’t like about this one is that after putting the dial on the desired setting, you still have to push a “start” button to make it start putting out mist.

I have gone through quite a few humidifiers. I had one like this before, after a few years it gave in because I never cleaned it (shame on me). So after reading these reviews on Amazon.com, I was initially VERY skeptical about this product working. Most of these reviews come from people in the Vine program or the reviews were being released rapidly over a short time period and that had me very doubtful.

But before I go into that, let me give you a little background on my personal story. I am 21 years old, South Asian-American (and thus my body’s genetic makeup is probably not appropriate for the cold winters of Vermont), and I’ve been having sleep problems since the age of 13 or 14.

For years, I would sleep in and miss classes, and would generally feel chronically fatigued and apathetic. I thought I had ADD/ADHD, so I self-diagnosed myself by eating better (lotta veggie, 2-3 cups of green tea, 2 fish oil pills, meat, not eating out, etc, exercising better (3 days of lifting, 3 days of HIIT running).

My problem got pretty bad to the point that I would miss important meetings or events. I was focused, and hardworking but I just could not wake up on time (and go to bed on time either)!

I would go to bed at say 11 PM, yet I would still wake up at 12 PM or 1 PM the next day. I would be like what the hell.

So then over this winter break (where I had a good 5 weeks off), I started letting myself go to bed at the time my body NATURALLY fell asleep (not when I *wanted* to). I found that I was going to bed at 3 AM.

And what happened? I STILL woke up at 11 AM!!!!

What did this show me? That I WAS getting 8 hours of sleep BUT it was at a later time (hence going to bed at 11 PM didn’t do anything because I really wasn’t falling asleep until 3-4 AM in the morning).

So why did this happen? Why did my sleep schedule get delayed (this problem is called DSPS or delayed sleep phase syndrome — it’s nothing serious it’s just a big pain when trying to function in society, a normal 40 hour job, etc. etc.)?

Well in high school I had bad habits. I would go to bed late playing VIDEO GAMES, watching TV, doing intellectually stimulating activities that would make me stay up late.

Also the summer before college started, I had a job where I was working as a waiter at night (4 PM-10 PM) or (6 PM-1 AM), and thus I was sleeping later.

Also, genetics is probably at fault too. My dad has this problem but not as bad as me (I think this is also because he’s a lot older, and he’s been working decades waking up at 5 AM for work that his body got FORCED to wake up then. Nevertheless, he is always chronically fatigued, and if given teh freedom to wake up when he wants would wake up at 9-10 am or so).

Anyways, before I digress any further, this winter break, I let my body go to bed when it wanted too. But then something bad happened. I was going to bed later and later every day (going to bed at 8 AM!!!). And thus, I would end up sleeping my 8 hours during the DAY!!! It was terrible. So I looked into chronotherapy, and I did something where I would go to bed a little bit later every day (so instead of going to bed at 8 am the next day, I would go to bed at 11 am, then 2 PM, then 5 PM, then eventually 8 PM), and let me assure you it was the most DEPRESSING and MISERABLE experience of my life.

Staying up for a good one and a half weeks at night, with no contact with anybody else, and getting even less sunlight because I would be up at night and sleep during the day affected my mood, made me irritable, cranky, and at times manic.

SOOOO, I got desperate and started doing research online and learned about light boxes and how they were effective treatment for these circadian rhythm/SAD problems.

It piqued my interest and I eventually found this product (Apollo was the company that makes these products, but Philips bought them over).

I was getting desperate because school is starting in a week, and my sleep schedule was still messed up so I ordered this thing and used 1-Day Fed-Ex shipping (and I never do that, I’m a poor college student LOL).

Immediately after the first session, I found that I was waking up at 5-6 AM NATURALLY and going to bed at 9-10 PM PHYSICALLY/EYELID HEAVY SLEEPY.

WOW. WOW. WOW.

I also felt happier too and the reason why this happens is that the blue light increases the production of SERATONIN (the happy go-lucky hormone that is low in depression, etc).

I’m a senior now majoring in biology, and I’ll briefly go into the details of the basic physiology of blue light.

Basically, your eye’s retina (a thin membrane at the back of the eye-ball) has a couple of receptors. The ones you’ve probably heard of were the rod and cones.

Well, there’s another one called the “MELANOPSIN” photoreceptor that scientists about 10 years ago discovered. And these are on the edges of the retina (not centric like the rods and cones).

These melanopsin photoreceptors absorb light of a specific wavelength and that is BLUE (460-480 nm).

Older light boxes used white light (which contained blue light) that mimicked light from the sun, but apparently those are superbright.

So why can’t you use a regular old BLUE lightBULB then? I don’t really know maybe someone can comment on this as I’m not a physicist.

Other notes: This thing is expensive, so if you want something a BIT cheaper you can go with the slightly older Philips/Apollo units some of them are as low as $80. I bought this one, I’m not going to lie, because of the ipod-esque/futuristic features (plus apparently the light on this unit is supposed to be a lot softer then the earlier ones [where people would often get headaches, eye pains, etc]. Some people have expressed concerns about macular degeneration and other eye damage that can be associated, but all the literature that I read showed that this was due to HIGH INTENSITY light being used for 6 HOURS a day for a time period (don’t remember how long). The Philips GoLite Blue unit claims to be safe, and the other thing is that you’re only going to be using it for 15-30 minutes in the morning anyways.

Ok, this review is getting long, so I’ll end this on one specific note and that is it feels great to be able to fall asleep like everyone else and to wake up at 6 AM in the morning (even on the weekends!) NATURALLY.

If you have problems waking up on time, have chronic fatigue, depression, SAD, ciracadian rhythm disorders, then this is an EXCELLENT investment on your quality of life.

P.S. You might be able to make a deduction on this unit with your health insurance or through your taxes, just a heads up, but I’m not 100% as of yet.

I highly recommend the Omron fat loss monitor for anybody who is serious about monitoring their body fat.

Why I Recommend It:
1. EASY to use. It’s almost dummy-proof
2. Inexpensive. For less than $26 you can have it delivered (Super-Saver shipping) including batteries.
3. I don’t need help to use it. I don’t know of any other method that you can do in the privacy of your home each and every day with the exception of calipers. And you need somebody else to use the calipers on you. Since they’re only accurate if that person knows what he/she is doing and measures you in the exact same place each time, I think it’s just easy to get a monitor.
4. Quick. I can take a measurement in about 10 seconds.

General Thoughts/Suggestions:
1. The instruction manual mentions this also but… Make sure to take the measurement at the same time each day. I take my measurements right before I leave the house for work before I’ve eaten or drank anything for the day.
2. Don’t expect the results to be perfect. If the measurement tells you that you’re 16% body fat, that’s probably pretty close to what you actually are. But depending on how much water you’ve had to drink, how recently you’ve exercised, how recently you’ve eaten, etc., the reading could go up to 17% or down to 15%. It’s best to be consistent with when you take your measurements and to use the monitor as a guide to tell you if you’re gaining or losing. I think of it as a fat loss compass… not a fat loss GPS.
3. Make sure that you keep your stats updated in the computer memory. I’m on a fat loss routine right now. I’ve lost 15 lbs since I began using the Omron monitor. It only takes a second to update your personal stats in the monitor’s memory. But you need to do it. Otherwise it’ll give you an inaccurate reading.

All in all, I’d say this is a great investment. Yes, you can lose body fat without using a monitor. But it is also possible to lose weight without losing body fat (i.e. water weight or muscle). I’m constantly tweaking my diet and workout routine to keep that percentage dropping. Without the monitor I’d be in the dark and I’m confident that I wouldn’t have seen the progress that I’ve seen thus far.

This caliper works well and the “click” feature takes the guesswork out of the correct pressure to use. The chart that’s included with the documentation is possibly too simplified, but there are sufficient online resources for using the calipers to determine body fat. I consider it a good value for the home user.

The caliper is *great* and the myotape can be useful, too. Both are easy to use.

Some reviews have said the caliper is too simple to be effective, but they are mistaken. Their problem is not with the caliper, but the way they are using it (see more below). This product is recommended by the pros, and there is no reason to pay any more.

Caliper: It’s a little tough to get a consistent reading, but with practice it gets easier. The product has a great “click” feature so you can never push too hard. Do not use the instructions or the chart that comes with the product, however, as it will decrease the accuracy and consistency of your body fat measurements. A much more reliable method is to use the internet (see below).

Myotape: Very easy to use and good compliment to caliper.

How to maximize this product using the internet:
1) EXRX dot net has a page which lists the skinfold sites to measure under /Testing/BodyCompSites.html and a calculator page under /Calculators/BodyComp.html that will give you the appropriate fat %. I use the 3 site method since the 7 site method requires the help of another person, and it’s not necessarily that much superior, anyway.
2) gain-weight-muscle-fast dot com /body-tape-measurements.html lists further regions to measure
3) Each time you measure (weekly, monthly, etc), do it the same time of day in the same exact spot. This will help minimize error.

Note, the instructions which come with the caliper do work, it’s just that it isn’t the best method, which is why some fitness freaks were complaining. Consistency across measurements is the most important thing when measuring body fat, and the suprailiac is terribly tough spot to hit consistently. Veer just a little off and the reading will change. But if you use the other method I listed, these problems will be alleviated. Also, the 3 site method is more accurate, with minimal additional effort.

I brought this one recently to replace the sharper image’s ionizer purifier, since I want something to shut off the ionizer — the air has some smell from those ions.

This unit has three speeds. Another switch to turn on or off the ionizer.

The lowest speed can push enough air comparable to Sharper Image’s high speed, without much noise. If no one talks in the room, you can still notice the sound. But if anyone talks or the TV is on, then you would not noticed the sound, even in a 8×10 room. Middle and high speed push 20-50 times more air than a Sharper Images ionizer purifiers. I wish it has a feature to push a button to boost the air flow to high speed for 15 minutes, then fall back to slowest speed…

I have other ionic air cleaners, as well as one that requires a filter. This air purifier is quiet and due to its compact size, can be placed off the floor on a bookcase, dresser top or top shelf which makes it optimal for space-saving and placement. I don’t particularly like the noise from air filters and they have a tendency to keep me up.

After spending many dollars on replacement filters and new air cleaners when the filter is no longer made or easily available, this is a welcome addition with a permanent cleanable filter. I bought two of these, one for my bedroom and one for the living room. Set on low all of the time, it is great as it just sounds like a little white noise and is not noticable most of the time. The optional ionic on and off switch, night light, as well as the automated light indicating that the filter should be cleaned is a BONUS besides the low price. So far, I am enjoying cleaner air in an old dusty house with 3 cats and 2 dogs…

I have bought the Sharper Image ionic breeze for the bathroom and find it hard to clean and hope that when I have to clean this filter. Good value for the money.

I might buy a second one for my home office. As another reviewer mentoned, it is a little noisey on high, but the second setting (which seems powerful enough for my needs) has a pleasant hum that acts as white noice. It has a nice stable design…because it sets square and low, my cats haven’t been tempted to try to push it over (some air purifiers looks a little too much like cat scratching posts). Instructions on how to use and clean are easy to follow. I’m not sure what the ionizer is supposed to do so I haven’t used that feature, but so far I seem to be sleeping better with it running than I was without it, so I am assuming it is doing ts job. No complaints so far.

Outstanding quality, consistency and accuracy! At the end of the day that is all you can ask from a blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer). A few things to bear in mind: In consecutive readings done at the same time, you will see a trend from higher to lower blood pressure as you “learn” to lower your own pressure. Also, your blood pressure at home will be lower than that you obtain at your doctor’s office until you learn to overcome the anxiety normally associated with the doctor’s office. This is normal and is one of the main reasons to obtain a home blood pressure monitor. Also, your pressure will fluctuate from day to day and even during a blood pressure monitoring session.

Let me give you an example: My heart rate is anywhere from 52 to 58. As the blood pressure cuff deflates your systolic pressure is the first pulse that the unit detects. The cuff pressure deflates 5-10 mm between each heart beat. So, depending on the timing of your pulse, your pressure reading will fluctuate approximately 5-10 mm systolic and diastolic. When your pressure is taken manually the operator can regulate the rate of deflation of the cuff so as to reduce the measurement error. So don’t automatically assume that the gauge is not giving accurate readings! Trust me, it is.

This monitor has been extensively tested against measurements obtained at the doctor’s office and has been determined to be as accurate a method of determining blood pressure as you would obtain at the doctor’s office – actually, more accurate since the anxiety factor is eliminated.

For some reason, when I purchased this item, it was cheaper than the Omron HEM-780, so purchasing it was a no brainer! I saved $5. Is it worth a little more than the HEM-780? It does have a few more bells and whistles including the software. But it is essentially the same unit. If you think you’d use the software which is kind of slick then by all means get this unit rather than the 780. Personally, I would definitely pay MORE, now that I have it and have used it, for this unit. The software if very helpful in keeping your BP records. Otherwise, the units are nearly identical in producing consistent accurate results.

So if you are looking for the best home blood monitor device on the market look no further. Just realize that there are minor variances in the readings attributable to fluctuations in your blood pressure and slight measurement error. I would also recommend the unit with the software – this can come in very handy in tracking your BP and its fluctuations. It also can provide you with a printed record of your readings for your doctor.

I had a blood pressure monitor but this is a good upgrade from the previous. It allow 2 people to monitor there blood pressure separately and you can very easily download your data to the software which comes with the monitor. I have gotten down in the dumps around November every year. This year it got bad enough that I finally decided to buy a light box. What can I say, it works! I use it in the morning for 30 minutes while I check emails. If I have time I use it in the evening when I get home from work for another 30 minutes. The only cons I can think of is that the ionizer thing smells bad. Sort of a strong plastic smell. I have been using the light box for around a month. I feel very good. I am not down in the dumps at all. I highly recommend this if you have seasonal effective disorder like I do. I would have bought this years ago had I known it would actually work.

I researched a lot of these units and couldn’t justify the expense, or how big and ugly they were. This unit is a great value, nice size, good appearance, quiet, has an automatic timer in 15 min increments then turns itself off. I almost didn’t buy it because of the ion/ozone feature, but it has a separate on/off button so I just don’t use it…though it does come in handy cleaning the air in my kitchen of cooking odors. Anyway, I love it. Winter in Wisconsin seems to last forever, and this winter I have my own little piece of sunshine!

I follow the manufacturer’s recommendation to change the pre-filter every 3 months on all my Honeywell Air Cleaners with HEPA filters. These replacement filters come boxed in a set of two. The pre-filter simply wraps around the round HEPA filter, which is inside the unit, and attaches to itself by means of two velcro fasteners. It takes less than five minutes to change the pre-filter. In between changes, I vacuum my pre-filters to remove accumulated dust and pet hair from them. These pre-filters do help to remove some odors from rooms, especially if you are able to keep the space enclosed where you have the air cleaner running.

Be sure to keep a box or two of these pre-filters on hand in case they become back ordered. The HEPA filter needs to be changed in 1-3 years, depending on conditions where it is located.

This filter is larger (taller) than it needs to be for most machines. You simply trim the filter (and it’s got pre-made perforations) to the height of your machine. And yes, this means that if you have one of the smaller machines, one which is less than half the height of the pre-filter, you might get two pre-filters for the price of one. Bonus.

I’d recommend getting the Honeywell version over the cheaper imitations, so as such, this receives my highest rating. It comes with good installation instructions, and getting it out of the box and onto your Hepa filter is a breeze, so if you’re in the market for one of these suckers (which if you’re like me, means you’re in the market every 3 months), then grab it, it’s cheap and you can count on the quality since it’s made by Honeywell.

Bought this couple of weeks back consequent to my son developing high fever and which fluctuated considerably. This caused the Red Cross $9.00 digital thermometer useless as it takes approx. a minute (under armpits) to record temparature. Our doctor advised us to buy Braun based ear thermometer.
First off – there are quite a models available. After taking to doctor and doing research – the 2 new models are IRT 4520 and IRT 4020. These are EXACT copies (all functionality) like their PRO 4000 versions! The ExacTemp feature has a pre-heated tip which is more comfortable for the ear. The older models (PRO 3000) is about $80, but uses lithium batteries and I don’t think has pre-heated tip.
Has a “sort of” battery meter. Starts to show – that battery’s low, flashing means – will effect results. (Very good)
Usage: Switch on, place tip (with tip cover, without cover, doesn’t work), push START and WITHIN TWO SECONDS you get the temperature. Slightly hold the ear in order to place the tip INTO THE EAR HOLE to get best INTERNAL EAR CANAL reading. The readings are stored for access later – total 8 memory readings. Auto shut-off: 60 sec.
The storage is into a white canister type case, which has HORIZONTAL standing (not good – as VERTICAL standing would have been better or if provided ALSO – good).
The given 21 nos. of lens caps are very little. Thankfully, the whole package of lens caps goes INSIDE the thermometer case, storing them together. I have put a Clorex cloth inside the case and into which I push the thermometer, this disinfects my cap and keeps the thermometer disinfected. (Just remember to change the cloth occasionally)
Size-wise it’s a bit thick and thus slightly problematic to carry along but due to it’s accuracy/etc. worth the hassle.
The ejector is very useful. Just press it and the lens cap is THROWN forward. Be careful, it’s literally EJECTED out. (Point towards garbage can – I hit my wife’s nose…;)
Note: If you get covers for the PRO 4xxx series – you can use it with IRT 4520. That’s very good. The batteries are regular AA series and last a bit. The IRT 4020 has 1 extra feature – has a protective plastic cap covering the disposable lens caps. That’s actually very useful. So, if you get 4520 and 4020 at approx. the same price, I would opt for 4020.
There are some calibrations possible, but advice you NOT to do so. If you keep pressing the I/O button even after OFF, then you can switch between Celcius/Farenheit settings. You can set the optimal temperature of the tip, define ambient room temp, etc – Keep i/o button pressed, after OFF starts to FLASH, there will be loud beep – immediately release the I/O button. Then keep pressing (short presses) of the I/O to switch.
Note: ALTHOUGH NOT STATED, IT’S ADVISABLE to have the thermometer calibrated professionally *KAZ, in US* annually.

(f) Lens covers are very costly
(g) The case should be able to STAND, not lying down only

I am sure I am not the first parent who has had to try and keep a struggling child steady while waiting 2+ minutes for the thermometer to register a reading. In this regard, the Braun ThermoScan is ideal. It takes an accurate ear reading in just a few seconds! The probe also does not feel cold to the touch, so my child actually seems to like having her temperature taken. The only drawback so far is that the LCD panel is not back-lit. It is impossible to see the reading in the semi-darkness, and one has to go to a light source to check the measurement. Otherwise, a great product.
